VCAP6-DCV Design Objective 1.2

We already had a detailed discussion about VCAP6 - DCV Design exam, where we discussed about the Path we need to follow and what are the objectives that we need to take care.

Well if in case you missed it here is the link for your reference Kick Start Your Journey Towards VCAP6-DCV Design.

In our last post we also have discussed about the VCAP6-DCV Design Objective 1.1 if in case you missed it here is the link  for the same VCAP6-DCV Design Objective 1.1

Let's proceed further and understand VCAP6-DCV Design Objective 1.2 in this article will see what are the Skills and Abilities required to prepare for this objective and what are the various tools/ Urls we can refer while doing the preparation.

Objective 1.2 -Gather and Analyze Application Requirements

Skills and Abilities
  • Gather and Analyze Application Requirements for a given scenario.
  • Collect information needed in order to identify application dependencies.
  • Given one or more application requirements, determine the impact of the requirements on the design.
How to Prepare
Let's start with the first link which talks about VMware TCO Calculator very good tool which help us understand the Total Cost of Ownership when compared with other Vendors.

By using this tool we can make selection of the Number of Virtual Machines, Storage Cost, License, Virtualization Host Type.

In order to gather the Application Requirements we need to conduct interviews with Application Owners, understand the SLA, and also think about the Vendor Documentation and Industry Average.

The First Question would be the type of Workload Business Critical, VDI environment ?

Performance, Availability specifications plays a Major role when gathering the information from Application Owners, asking the right question is Vital.

Another question may come from the communication perspective whether the Application Owners are looking for the communication to outside world.

Further questions may vary depending upon the Duration, Length and the number of Applications they are planning to Deploy in their Virtualized Environment.

Virtualizing Business Critical Applications talks about mission critical applications like Exchange, SAP, Sharepoint, SQL, JAVA and focusses on some of the Key Points like Consolidation RatioHigh Availability, Disaster Recovery and Performance.

All these above links are the Best Practice Guide which we need when virtualizing mission critical applications and include the same in our VMware vSphere Design.

Business and Financial Benefits of VirtualizationCustomer Benchmarking Study

This last link mentioned in our Blueprint talks about the Business and Financial Benefits of Virtualization, reduction in operating Expenses, improvement seen in Business Continuity, improved Customer Services.

Key Note - The scope behind this post was to understand what all are the factors related to Applications Requirements we need to take care of when working with VMware vSphere Design, what questions need to be asked with the Application Owners / Applications users because asking the right questions is Vital.

All the guides and customer success stories with industry best practices always act as an helping hand for the Architect /Consultant when he is working towards VMware vSphere Design.
